The first thing to remember is you are coming to B’Berg to relax.

Forget your worries for a while and slow down. If you are the sort of person who is easily bored, might not be the place for you.

But if you like chill times, beers, good conversation - you have found your Utopia.

Welcome to the 4670.

Bundaberg produces a huge amount of Australia's small crops. A lot of places don’t take advantage of the fresh, amazing produce, but many do. Service can be a bit chilled in the B’Berg. You always order at the counter and never wait for all your meals to come out before you start, sometimes they are a bit all over the shop. Also most dinner places stop service at 8pm. Here are some of my favourite spots.

Eleven Acres - Bundaberg (outer west)

What a venue. Located in the bush on the western outskirts of Bundy. Relaxed vibe in this destination location. Feels like a farm with a modern art injection. Young local chef doing some exciting things with local produce. Take a walk after you eat. Breakfast, lunch 7 days. Dinner Friday and Saturday. $$$

Water Street Kitchen - Walkervale

Can a cafe change the whole vibe of a suburb? No doubts. Water Street Kitchen is like going to your Nana's house if she was a 24 year-old artist obsessed with fine dining. Young crowd, creative vibe bistro hidden away in the burbs of Bundy. Food is fine dining street food, like pulled pork Po-Boys and Ramen. Coffee is as good as you can get and baked treats as tasty as any Melbourne bearded baker can dream of. Only open Monday to Friday, but I think this place is going to be like a Pokemon and evolve rapidly. $$$$

Indulge - Bundaberg

Incredible award winner paddock to plate cafe. Euro vibe and good strong coffee. Meals are huge so don’t be afraid to share. Good place for a morning (10am) beer. Seasonal menu with farmers delivering produce each morning. No night service and closed Sunday. Only serve breakfast menu to 11am, then switches. Only breakfast menu on Saturdays and closes at 12 noon. $$$

Oodies Cafe - Bundaberg North

The chill vibe in this little cafe is off the charts. This place is Bundaberg. The food is basic but delicious. So friendly and creative. The story of it is perfect as well, two sisters that teamed up to transform a flooded old shop front to a bespoke urban cafe. Free wifi and you can really kick back. Some night time music events happen here as well. $$

Riverfeast - Bundaberg East

Every Friday night and some Sundays outdoor food and booze party. This is such a great place to sit and watch the sunset over the river while having a local beer (Baffle Beer or Bargara Beer). Variety of food stalls and local musicians belting out some tunes. It’s an old shipping construction warehouse and has street art covering the walls. Looks pretty too. Must try the 4670 BBQ (12-hour slow cooked amazement) and Lick Dessert Bar (donut sweet goodness). $$

Busy Bee Fish and Chips - Bundaberg

Mind blowing experience. 50 years in the same spot. Double battered chips are NEXT LEVEL. Deep fried banana and pineapple. Must do. $

At James’s Place - Bundaberg

Korean influenced breakfast and burger bar. Truly amazing huge burgers cooked with passion. The vego mushroom burger is worth a try. The Double Burger is insane. Good to see the Asian/Australian flavour mash-up. Not open Sundays and late Thursday and Friday night only. $$

Diamond Garden Chinese - Bundaberg North

I have had some big nights in the unique Chinese restaurant. Perfect for a big party crew and oh so cheap for the quality of the feed. Whack a bottle of rum on the middle of the table and feast. Good place to go if you want to eat a bit later. Take-away at the front, dine in out the back. The Chef is a bit of a local legend. $

Casablanca's - Bargara

I need a beer at 11am, followed quickly by a coffee. I want to relax. I want tapas and beers on a Saturday arvo. I want lovely friendly family vibe service. I want to feel like I'm in some little Spanish place. Yeah, all that here. Baffle Beer on tap too. $$

Windmill Cafe - Bargara

Great little brekky place. Last time I ate here they were doing some cool stuff with local produce. Can be a little hit and miss with service. Hours are a bit all over the shop too. $$

Red Chilli Thai - Bargara

Best Thai in region. Need to book. I don’t think it’s BYO. $$

Nourish Cafe - Bundaberg

If you are looking for a healthy option, Nourish is a clean eating as you can get. Vegan and vego options that will blow your mind. No night service. $$

Brewhouse - Bundaberg

Beer brewery in an old converted warehouse. They do really basic pizzas and some small bites. Some interesting takes on beer, pumpkin for example. Open nights and good vibe. Just wish they did more events, get a Sunday or Saturday BBQ happening dudes. $$

Grunske’s Seafood - Bundaberg East

Fresh seafood you can eat while looking at the boat unload more. Great spot on the river. Can be pricey, but just go the Hot and Cold Seafood basket and share it. Watch the sun set and eat your fill. No BYO and open nights. $$$

Mollydooker's Cafe - Apple Tree Creek

Canadian themed restaurant beyond great. Amazing menu. Must try the Rueben Sandwich. $$

Bundy Pub Meals

All are pretty spot on for good generic pub food. Most have specials on weeknights.

Good picks are:

  • Spotted Dog - Bundaberg

  • Melbourne Hotel - Bundaberg South

  • The Club Hotel - Bundaberg

  • The Metro Hotel - Bundaberg

Pick your own

Lots of roadside stalls dotted around the place, look out for hand painted signs and super cheap local, just picked produce. This guide is a pretty good roadmap to get you started but you will see them along your way - just have change handy.

Riverfeast

At James's Place

Bundy beaches are seriously underrated. The golden sand is coarse but still nice under your feet. So much variety and places to explore and fantastic wildlife. No crowds!!!

Mon Repos

French for ‘My Rest’. This beach is a spiritual place. Largest turtle rookery on the East Coast it feels so remote but is only 10km from the centre of town. Bike path links it with Burnett Heads and Bargara. Peace and quiet and minimal currents. Sometimes some small surf (long board or paddle board). Super private and relaxing. Easy access at Northern and Southern ends. Not patrolled, so stay in the shallows. No dogs as they bait for foxes.

Coonarr

Slightly whiter sand. Easy access but not a sealed road. There is a Northern end (car access) and a Southern end (4x4 only). You can see Elliott Heads from here and it’s a good hike to the Elliott River with plenty of wildlife to observe (kangaroos, eagles). Very private so perfect if you prefer to swim nude. This is not a clothing optional beach, but you often see naked bathers. You are allowed to have a fire on this beach, and dogs on a leash. So relaxing.

Elliott Heads

The mouth of the Elliott River is becoming more and more popular because it is such a perfect spot to kick back. You can grab some beers and just have an afternoon float. Can be strong currents. Looks really different at low and high tide. Plenty of rock pools and wildlife. Great spot for water sports. Kite surfing is super popular here and you can hire some gear.

The Basin - Kellys Beach

Such a fun, family friendly place. It’s an artificial swimming hole perfect for a dip or snorkel. Lot’s of fish to see and even feed. Beautiful at high tide.

Neilson Park - Bargara

Perfect family beach with a little bit of surf. Small coffee shop at the Surf Lifesaver building. Plenty of swings and a skate park. Really safe and patrolled. Easy access.

Woodgate Beach

About a 30 minute drive south of Bundaberg. So many kangaroos!! Not a whole lot here but it’s a really amazing stretch of beach. Needs a nice little beach shack cafe. Sun sets like you won’t believe. Theodolite Creek is worth a visit at the northern end of Woodgate. Clear blue, still water. Perfect. Fishing capital of Bundy.

Like I said, main thing to do in Bundy is relax. But here is a few things to keep you busy. There is actually a whole bunch of fun things to try and it’s so easy to get to them all.

Snorkel at Barolin Rocks

This is one of the few places in the world where you can see coral on the mainland coast. You jump off the black volcanic rock and into a trippy world filled with fish of all sizes. If it’s windy, it sucks here, way too rough. Early mornings are best. If you are lucky you might see turtles, dugongs or sharks. No fishing as it’s a Marine Park. Easy access and a few rock pools if it’s too rough to enter the water. B’Berg is one of the cheapest places in Australia to get your dive licence. It’s about a 3-day course.

Kalki Moon Distilling & Brewing

This shed out near the airport may not look like much but inside is a booze adventure. The master brewer must be a genius. After a year they are already winning awards for their delicious gins and liquors celebrating life in Australia's food bowl. Pink gin that will turn you into a fabulous flamingo. Taste and fall in love.

Ohana Winery and Exotic Fruits - Childers

Wines, liqueurs and craft ciders. Cellar door in a orchard. Very special.

Bundy Food Tours

Go behind the scenes on farms, seafood producers and butchers. We do farming well in the 4670 and supply Australia with a lot of small crops. Pretty interesting half day tour with Suzie.

Bundaberg Rum Distillery Tour

This is actually really great. The big bottle, free rums and crazy activities like make your own blend. Even if you don’t like rum it’s worth a visit just to see the giant molasses pool. Sugar Mill next door as well.

The Bundaberg Brewed Drinks Factory

Worth calling in to see the giant barrel they do a tour but I have never heard good reports and haven’t bothered myself. Hopefully one day they do a little more for tourists as the Ginger Beer is the best thing in the world.

Turtle Tours

Between November and March you can do the Mon Repos turtle rookery laying/hatching tours. So primal. Love those little turtles. Really popular, so book well in advance online. If you go for an afternoon beach walk, you could luck out and spot a turtle laying or hatching. Beach closes in season from 6pm to 6am but outside of this you are free to roam the beach and be turtle rangers.

Bundy Bowl Centre

This place is epic. If the weather is rubbish it’s a pretty fun place. Indoor dodgems, Jurassic Putt Putt, Nerf Wars and bowling. Really well priced and beer and food available. Open late and 7 days.

Snakes Downunder Reptile Park - Childers

I was so glad I eventually visited here. It’s such an old school repite park where the owners are passionate about the animals. Best to arrive about 9.30am and do all the shows, peaking with crocodile feeding at 12.30. Really, really worth the $25 entry - like old school Australia Zoo, up close and personal.

Cross Gallery

This privately run little art space is like going down the rabbit hole. How can this exist in Bundaberg? From the whack, to abstract, to just mind blowing artworks from around the world. Curator Clinton Cross (David Walsh of B'Berg) will give you the tour of his space. Opens strange hours, so best keep an eye on the Cross Gallery Facebook page or message Clinton on there.

Bourbong Street Shopping Adventure

So many quirky and unique little shops down the Bundaberg main street. No 7/11s just Ma and Pa goodness. You will be surprised at how long it takes you to take them all in once you start. Cheap, cheap, cheap.

Nana’s Pantry

Local food distribution shop. Really hard to describe (like organic whole food stores where you weigh and measure your own but with snacks, dried fruits, cereals etc and lollies/chocolate etc all served like this) but worth a pop in. They make their own gelato which are beyond belief (the last combo I tried had blue cheese in it!) Must do. Ask about the locally produced Well Loved worcestershire sauce. It’s addictive.

Op Shop until you pass out

Bundy op shopping is some of the best you will encounter. Elderly population downsizing (&/or dying) means so much gold. Cheap as well. Some have $1 days.

My top three:

  • Guide Dogs (15 McLean Street)

  • RSPCA (12 Maryborough Street)

  • Anglican Op Shop (59 Woongarra Street)

Burnett River Cruise

This is really fun and very relaxing. Goes most days and depends on tides. Really nice way to see some of town's quirky history.

Hinkler Hall of Aviation

Bert Hinkler was a aviation legend. I only did this fairly recently and I like it a lot.

Moncrieff Entertainment Centre

Cheap movies ($8) and shows. Worth a google to see what’s on. Choc Top Cones FTW.

Alexandra Zoo Park

Cute old school park with a little zoo attached. Emus and dingoes. Nice place to take some snags and beats and beers and have a little BBQ.

Day Trip to Lady Musgrave Island or few nights at Lady Elliott Island

Day trip leaves from Burnett Heads. Snorkel, dive and swim on the Great Barrier Reef for the day. A few nights at Lady Elliott Island is really worthwhile if you dig nature and snorkelling. Flights only. Leaves from Bundy.

Elliott Heads

The Basin - Bargara

Snakes Downunder

You can find a pub or two on every corner. They are all cheap and all guarantee a good time. Bundy pubs are pretty fun. People love a chat and the vibe is generally pretty chill. Here is a few of my favourites, either because they are fun, nice or just weird. You can work out what each pub is like from the few words listed in the pub crawls.

Top pub

For a true Queensland bar experience The Globe Hotel at Bundaberg North can’t be missed. Amazing bar with a good mix of locals and backpackers (and dogs). No food but you can order pizza from a nearby Italian place and eat it there. Cheap cheap cold beer and I have had some big nights here. One of the few pubs that has original live music nights. I have seen everything from relaxed beach rock through to power metal, keep an eye on their FB page. Pokie free (I think).

Here are two pub crawls if you have the balls

Small tour

  1. Brewhouse (pizza and paddle of beers)

  2. Old Bundy Tavern (for a whack cocktail)

  3. The Metro (sit watch the world pass you by on Bourbong Street)

  4. The Queenslander (the Bali beer garden with pole and cage must be seen)

  5. The Club (for a bit of dancing)

  6. The Central for the brave (they don’t call it the dirty cenny for nothing) it's a late night other world.

Long crawl

  1. Melbourne Hotel Rum Bar (verandah drinking) or The Globe Hotel (Bundy North)

  2. The Queenslander (the Bali beer garden with pole and cage must be seen)

  3. Brewhouse (pizza and paddle of beers)

  4. Old Bundy Tavern (for a whack cocktail)

  5. The Metro (sit watch the world pass you by on Bourbong Street)

  6. The Grand (pretty old school main street pub)

  7. Spotted Dog (grown up beer garden recovery)

  8. The Club (for a bit of dancing)

  9. The Central for the brave (they don’t call it the dirty cenny for nothing) it's a late night other world

Kakli Moon Distilling & Brewing

This still in a shed will blow your mind. Pink gin! Flamingo!

Ohana Winery and Exotic Fruits - Childers

Wines, liqueurs and craft ciders. Cellar door in a orchard. Very special.

Baffle Beer

Incredible beer brewed by a German brewmaster that has dropped out to Baffle Creek. Keep those dollars in the local economy and it’s great beer.

Bargara Beer (The Brewhouse)

Bunch of different beers with some local stories surrounding their names. Nice vibe in the Brewhouse. You can spot local hand carved taps behind the bar. And our very famous lungfish (look it up).

Rum

You are in the rum capital of the world. Combine our two local best, Bundy Rum and Bundy Ginger Beer and you will feel like a true hero.

The Brewhouse
